....money or time?
After today, I think I'd have to say: time.
I should be in Missouri writing this tonite. But after spending 6 hours waiting at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Allegiant Airlines announced that my flight today to Mid-America Airport, just outside of St. Louis was being canceled. "Try again tomorrow at 10:30am," the lady at the gate said.
'Turns out heavy fog in the MidWest prevented the flight from ever taking off for the 3-hour flight. That's a weather-related causation, or better known (esp. to insurance people) as "An Act of God". I expected maybe to be held-up by freezing rain, ice, snow, or heavy winds...but....fog? You always think someone else is a victim of weather-related travel delays. Never yourself!
I'm one of the lucky ones, though...I had a home to fall back on. Others who were making a connection got no help from the airlines for their unexpected layover. "Act of God" you know. The airlines are not responsible.
At the moment of the announcement, I would have probably paid a reasonable sum to continue on...but it wasn't to be. I lose one day off my holiday vacation. I wasted a day in an airport. All plans were set back 24 hours. Time.
AND...the infuriating realization finally sunk in that I'd have to go through the whole rigamarole again in the morning. The lines at the SkyCap...the lines at the TSA security checkpoint...laptop and shoes in a tub, belt off, PRAYING that the buzzer doesn't go off as you pass through the portal to freedom! Time.
And if you thought the airport was busy on a THURSDAY before Christmas...wait till you see the FRIDAY before Christmas. Time.
Hey, I should complain? I have WILL get the time...a whole 10....er, uh...now, 9 days off to be with my family. It'll give me something to talk about to 250 of my new best friends that I'll see again first thing in the morning.
;-}
